Early Warning and the CardAwareService receive police praise.

Fraudsters Arrested, Charged, Convicted & Jailed
Police at Forest Gate Fraud Liaison Office have been investigating a major Internet fraud whereby they have identified that £18,000 (approximately) worth of goods were fraudulently ordered over the Internet for delivery to addresses in Katherine Road, London, E6 and also an address in Walsall. An address was searched in August 2002 and two persons (Mohammed Aslam and Nasreen Akhtar) were arrested. Due to the amount of property recovered (necessitating the use of a 7.5 tonne lorry to take it all away!!) a lengthy investigation then ensued.

Due to other work commitments and the complexity of gathering the necessary evidence both persons remained on bail until April 2003. On 2nd April 2003 Mohammed Aslam of 20 Katherine Road E6 was charged with 29 offences and a further 27 offences were prepared for him to have them taken into consideration. He appeared at Stratford Magistrates Court on 29th April 2003 and pleaded guilty to 24 of the 29 charged offences and agreed to have 14 of the 27 other offences taken into consideration. He was then bailed to appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court for sentence on 30th May 2003. He was subsequently sentenced to a total of 18 months imprisonment.

Nasreen Akhtar (sister of Aslam) was interviewed on 14th April 2003 with regard to her involvement in the Internet Fraud. This matter was not pursued due to a lack of evidence. However she was charged with two offences of False Accounting concerning Housing Benefit Fraud. She appeared at Stratford Magistrates Court on 7th May 2003 and pleaded guilty. She was later sentenced to an 18 month Community Rehabilitation Order (the District Judge did state that this would normally be suitable for a term of 6 months imprisonment!) TOGETHER WE HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE. The investigating officers would like to thank all those involved in Early-Warning. The assistance provided was instrumental in bringing about this successful prosecution.
